Northern Lights Christmas holidays
Checked October 2026
You can try for them in December, when the nights are longest, though no month is safe from cloud. The Aurora Zone says December is about atmosphere. It lists long nights, Father Christmas, and husky and reindeer experiences alongside the lights. So treat the lights as a bonus on a festive trip.
Can you see the Northern Lights in Norway in December?
You can try, and the sky is dark for much of the day. The Aurora Zone says the sun is gone in Tromsø from the end of November to mid-January. It says early-evening auroras are possible there. That is a real plus if you don't want a late night.
But dark isn't the same as clear. The US agency NOAA says the sky must be clear of cloud and dark. December gives you the dark. It can't give you the clear. Cloud can still win, whichever month you travel.
Treat December as a good setting for the lights. It is not a guarantee of them.
Is it a Santa trip or an aurora trip?
Usually both, and you should decide which comes first. The Aurora Zone says December is about atmosphere. It lists long nights, Father Christmas, and husky and reindeer experiences alongside the lights.
Arctic Direct's Finland Christmas page describes the festive side. It lists Santa breakfasts, private sleigh rides and reindeer feeding in its festive trips.
If the lights matter most, ask how many evenings are free for a hunt. If the Santa side matters most, ask which activities fall on which days. A trip full of festive events leaves less room for the sky.
How dark does it get in Finnish Lapland?
Dark by day as well. The Aurora Zone says the sun does not rise in northern Finland from mid-December to early January. The light is called "Kaamos" blue light. Most activities run in that light or in the dark.
That changes the day, so ask our travel team what the daytime programme looks like.
How early should I book?
Best Served says its highlights sell out months ahead, especially over Christmas and New Year. If you can move, other months may leave more choice. Our month guide compares them.
What is open on 24 to 26 December, and when do flights stop?
Ask both questions before you pay. Ask whether the restaurants and museums are open where you are staying. Ask when the last flights leave. Our travel team can check your dates.
Get the answers in writing, with the dates of your own trip.
How many nights should I book, and is there a gentler way?
Our advice is at least three, and more if you can. One cloudy evening can rule out a one-night hunt. No month is safe from cloud. Our nights guide explains why more evenings help.
There is a gentler way too. The Aurora Zone says its glass-roofed cabins have heated roofs above the bed, so you can watch from indoors. Our glass igloo page covers what a glass-roof stay gives you. It also covers what it can't.
Before you book a festive trip, ask our travel team:
- Which evenings are free for a hunt?
- What is open on 24 to 26 December?
- When do the last flights leave?
- Which festive activities fall on which days?
- How early must I pay the balance?
