Reykjavik Northern Lights tours

Checked October 2026

A city break can work if you book the aurora tour for your first evening and keep a spare night. Best Served says tours take you beyond the city lights, which improves your chance. The same idea works in Tromsø, where a guided trip can head out of town.

Can I pair Reykjavik or Tromsø with a Northern Lights tour?

Yes, and it is a sound way to use a short break. You get a city by day and a trip into the dark by night. Best Served says tours led by experienced guides take visitors to little-known viewing spots. It says the lights can be seen on clear nights from Reykjavik's parks or Grótta lighthouse. It adds that drives beyond the city improve the chance.

The Aurora Zone gives you plenty to fill the day. It says Reykjavik Old Harbour has restaurants, museums and departures for whale watching. It also lists Northern Lights boat trips from there. It adds that dedicated excursions take you beyond the city lights.

So a city break is easy to fill. The question is only how you fit the lights around it.

When should I book the tour on a short break?

On your first evening, if the schedule allows. Then a cloudy start still leaves you a second go. A tour booked on your last night leaves you no room for the weather.

Keep a spare evening free for the same reason. Don't fill every night with dinner reservations. The Aurora Zone says forecasts do not reach more than a few hours ahead. You can't pick the clear night in advance.

What does the tour give me that the city doesn't?

Darkness, mainly. The Aurora Zone says you stand the best chance outdoors, away from light pollution, keeping watch on the sky. A city has streetlights. A tour takes you away from them.

The US agency NOAA says the sky must be clear of cloud and dark. A tour deals with the dark part. It can't deal with the cloud. That is why a spare night matters.

What does a Northern Lights guarantee mean?

Whatever the seller's own terms say, so ask for them in writing. Is it a free retry, a refund or something else? Does the retry fall inside your stay?

What about Tromsø?

The same idea works there. Best Served says Tromsø is a three-and-a-half-hour flight from London. It lists restaurants and pubs for the evenings. It says snowmobile, 4x4 or husky transport takes you out to basecamps. So you can use the city by day and head out in the evening.

Our Tromsø page covers it in more detail. Our Iceland page covers Reykjavik and the wider country.

Which is better for a long weekend, and what is included?

Both can work. Our page on Iceland or Norway sets them side by side. Look at the flight time, the cost of drinks and the risk of cloud before you choose.

What is included depends on the seller, so ask. Some trips include flights and some don't. Our guide to what is included shows what to check.

Before you book a short break, ask our travel team:

  • Which evening is the aurora tour on?
  • Is there a spare evening if it is cloudy?
  • Are flights part of the booking?
  • How far does the tour travel from the city?
  • What is the tour's guarantee, in writing?

Put the answers side by side before you pay.
