Northern Lights in Finland
Checked October 2026

December covers trips from 2023 to 2025 only, and the confidence band is roughly 72% to 89%. This describes reviewers, not your chances of seeing the lights, and it says nothing about the sky. Base: 1,412 published traveller reviews we analysed, posted Jan 2023 to Oct 2026. Checked October 2026.
Method: from published traveller reviews posted Jan 2023 to Oct 2026 we kept the 1,412 about a Northern Lights trip in the aurora season, then counted the reviewers who said whether they saw the lights, by the month they travelled. An independent reader checked a sample of the coding and recomputed every count.
Where in Finnish Lapland should I stay?
Stay somewhere with a glass roof for at least one night. The Aurora Zone names glass-roofed stays at Saariselkä, Levi, Pyhä, Ivalo, Nellim, Muotka, Inari and Nangu. That is a long list, so you have a choice of settings. Our glass igloo page covers what to check before you pick one.
Mind the room size. The Aurora Zone says its Aurora Suites sleep up to five. It advises no more than four adults sharing. If you are travelling as a larger group, ask about that before you book.
Count the nights under the glass too. Arctic Direct's three-night Inari example, flying from Gatwick to Ivalo, gives you one night in a glass-roof Aurora Cabin. The other two are in a wilderness room. That is one special night, not every night.
How cold and how dark is it?
Colder than you may expect, and darker than home. The Aurora Zone says September and October temperatures run from 10°C to freezing. Snow has been known to fall in September. From November to February the daily averages sit between -5 and -15°C.
Daylight changes fast. The Aurora Zone gives Kittilä about 7 hours at the end of October. From mid-December to early January the sun does not rise at all. You get the "Kaamos" blue light instead. By the end of January it is about 5 hours. By the end of February it is 8 to 9, and by the end of March it is over 13.
So pick your month by what you want from the days. Midwinter gives you the longest nights. Late winter gives you more daylight for activities. The Aurora Zone says the hunting season ends in the first weeks of April.
How much does it cost to stay in a glass igloo in Finland?
The month, the number of nights and the type of room set the price. So does what comes with the stay. This guide sets no prices.
The Aurora Zone says Finland is not cheap, alcohol especially. On its FAQ page, read on 15 October 2026, it puts a glass of wine at £6 to £8. It also says none of its holidays is all-inclusive, so budget for extras. Our guide to what is included shows what to ask about.
How much do three nights in Lapland cost?
It depends on what sits inside the trip. Arctic Direct's Inari example lists return flights, full board, thermal clothing and five timed activities. Compare any quote against a list like that. A low figure may leave things out that another quote includes.
Our travel team prices your actual trip. Tell them your month, your airport and how many of you are going.
Is Finland or Norway better?
It depends on what you want to do all day. Finnish Lapland suits snow, glass cabins and activities. Our page on Finland or Norway sets the two side by side. The Aurora Zone lists clear weather and more than one night among its four things that make a place good.
Plan for several nights, whichever you choose.
Before you book a Finland trip, ask our travel team:
- Which airport do I fly into, and how far is the base?
- How many nights are under glass?
- Which activities are in the price?
- How cold will it be on my dates?
- What clothing comes with the trip?
Get the answers for each quote you're weighing up, so you compare the same things.
