Husky, reindeer and snow days

Checked October 2026

Ask how many minutes you spend moving, not only the hours on the schedule. Arctic Direct's Inari example lists a 3-hour husky safari, a 2-hour snowmobile safari and a 2-hour reindeer visit. Check the thermal clothing, who drives and what your insurance covers before you pay.

Which excursions are worth paying for?

The ones where you know what you get for the time. A schedule gives you hours. It doesn't always tell you how much of that is spent moving. Ask for the riding time and the distance before you pay.

Here's what one operator's list looks like. Arctic Direct's three-night Inari example lists these timed activities:

  • a 2-hour snowmobile safari
  • a 3-hour husky safari
  • a 2-hour reindeer visit
  • a 2.5-hour Aurora camp by snowmobile sleigh
  • 2.5 hours of Aurora snowshoeing

Thermal clothing is included throughout, Arctic Direct says. That is five activities in three nights.

What does the thermal clothing cover?

Ask for the detail, because it differs. The Aurora Zone says most of its holidays provide thermal overalls, gloves, boots and socks. "Most" matters here. Check that yours does, and check for how long. Is it for the whole stay or only during an activity?

Ask our travel team what you need to bring yourself.

Do I pay extra for activities?

Possibly. The Aurora Zone says there can be single supplements on activities such as snowmobiling. A single supplement is an extra charge for one person travelling alone. It also says extras booked locally fall outside the operator's responsibility.

So decide before you travel which activities you want. Our guide to what is included lists the other items to check.

Does my travel insurance cover husky sledding and snowmobiling?

Not always. The FCDO is the UK government's travel advice service. It says to take out travel insurance that covers your itinerary and planned activities. The Aurora Zone adds that not all policies cover these activities. It says to run through each one with the insurer.

Do that before you book. Tell the insurer exactly what you plan to do. Get the answer in writing. A policy that excludes snowmobiling is no use on a snowmobile day.

Who can drive a snowmobile?

Our travel team can tell you who may drive, what licence is needed and what you pay if the vehicle is damaged. Ask whether that cost, called an excess, can be reduced. These are the questions that decide the real price of the day.

Where do these days fit in a Lapland trip?

They fill the daytime and leave the evenings for the hunt. Our Finland page shows where Finnish trips of this kind run. Our trip shapes guide shows the other kinds of holiday.

Questions to put to our travel team:

  • How many minutes am I moving?
  • Is the thermal clothing mine for the whole stay?
  • Who drives the snowmobile, and is a licence needed?
  • What is the damage excess?
  • Which activities are in the price?

The excess question is the one most likely to change the real price of the day.

One more check on the schedule: ask how the days fit around the evenings. Our Finland page covers a place where trips like these run. Ask our travel team to show you a day-by-day plan, so you see where the hunt sits.
